Speed Optimisation Guide PDF Print E-mail

There are number of things that you can do to maximize your potential speeds.

Remember though, that ultimately your speed is dependant on the speed of the service that you have, & the distance that you are from the telephone exchange, type of cable in street etc.

1/ Make sure your modem is running the latest firmware

Check firmware version in Modem & check on Manufacturer website

2/ Make sure that your filters are OK

Unplug line filters & phones & run a speed test.

http://speedtest.ispone.com.au

Then plug them back in again & do another speedtest

If there is a significant difference, then either a phone or filter is causing it

3/ Minimise the number of phones & filters

You shouldn’t have more than 3 devices plugged into your phone line if you can avoid it

If you have more, change to a central filter instead of lots of line filters

4/ Check that you have no unfiltered devices connected to phone service.

Look for things like back to base alarms, fax machines, dial up modems etc

5/ The rule of thumb is shorter phone cables & longer Ethernet cables

If your modem is a long way from telephone socket on a telephone extension cable, you are much better to have the modem close to the socket, with a short phone cable & run a long Ethernet cable.

6/ If you have a splitter/filter, unplug all its connections (modem & phone) then plug

them back in again

7/ Make sure the filter is plugged in the right way around

Line goes to phone socket

Phone goes to phone

ADSL or Modem goes to Modem

8/ If your internet drops out when the phone rings, your filter has failed.

9/ Try testing with your Anti Virus turned off

10/ Check that you don’t have any open connections to the net that are taking up

Bandwidth

In Windows open the command prompt & type in “netstat –a” (without the quotes). See if there are any connections open that shouldn’t be

11*/ Try downloading & running the excellent free malware bytes application from

http://www.malwarebytes.org/ to find & kill any nasties

12*/ Download & install the SG TCP Optimiser application from

http://www.speedguide.net/downloads.php

It isn’t supposed to make any difference on Vista or Win 7 machines, but I have seen it make a vast improvement

* Please create a restore point on your computer before installing any software

13/ Make sure that you are only running one anti-virus application. (Malware Bytes is

NOT an AV application so you can run it as well as your Anti Virus)

14/ Ensure that your Modem and/or Router is located away from any strong

electrical or magnetic fields. For example speakers & the like.

15/ Try standing your Modem on edge to increase its exposure to cooling air.

Make sure it has good air flow around it

16/ Test with the telephone cable to modem NOT running through a surgeboard

17/ You should switch your modem off for approx 10 mins once a week
